Son’s Eternal Generation

The Son’s eternal generation from the Father is the Orthodox understanding of how the Second Person of the Trinity exists in relation to the First. The Son is eternally begotten or generated by the Father, not created, not made, but coming forth from the Father’s essence in a manner that is beyond time and utterly unique to the Father–Son relationship.

This generation is not an event that occurred at some point in the past. It is eternal, meaning it has always been true and will always be true. There was never a time when the Son did not exist or when the Father existed without the Son.

The Father is the source and fountainhead of divinity within the Trinity, and the Son is eternally generated from Him, sharing the exact same divine essence. The Son is equal to the Father in every way, fully God, yet distinct as a Person.

Human language is limited when speaking about divine realities. In ordinary terms, generation implies a beginning, but eternal generation means there is no beginning at all. The Son is always being generated, and the Father is always Father.

Within the Trinity, there is only one Cause: the Father. From Him all divine relations flow. This preserves both the unity of God and the real distinction of Persons without division or hierarchy of essence.
